Long-time Musical Colleagues in Boulder Concert Band

Photograph taken by Arthur Feller in June 2013 at a Baltimore Symphony Academy rehearsal. Photo property of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.

Forty years ago, Denise Hayward and Peter Alexander met in the clarinet section of a community orchestra at Mesa College in San Diego, where they were stand partners. Denise was a high school student and Peter was in the military.

Then life happened. Peter completed his military duty and returned to his home state of Indiana to attend graduate school. He then worked full time, had a family, got involved in church choir, and wrote musicology articles. Denise graduated from high school and went on to earn her engineering degree, and had a family. Neither Denise nor Peter played their clarinets during those years.

Thirty-seven years later they reconnected through LinkedIn, and the duo is back in fine musical form. They have played together in at least four bands in California and Colorado, plus the Baltimore Symphony Academy, and several other orchestra events.

"The return to clarinet has been extremely meaningful to both of us," commented Peter. "It was just about the best present we could give each other after so many years."

Forty years later, Denise and Peter are once again stand partners - this time in the Boulder Concert Band.

This photo of Peter and Denise was taken in the fall of 1973 at a San Diego Mesa College Community Orchestra concert.

Colorado Music Festival Finale Concert.

The Yard by Alex Grecian (Crime story set in Victorian London right after Jack the Ripper cases; I love historical mysteries).

What is your favorite movie?
Ditto—too many to name one, so I'll offer three very different films: Casablanca (always one of the usual suspects), The Princess Bride (it would be a classic blunder to leave it off) and the one that ties them all together, The Big Lebowski. But that's just today's list. Tomorrow I might name others.
