Meet Martha Ramos, Flute

How's this for a coincidence? Remember the article featuring clarinetists Denise Hayward and Peter Alexander? Forty years ago, they met in the clarinet section of a community orchestra at Mesa College in San Diego, and are once again sharing a stand as members of the Boulder Concert Band. We included a photo of them taken in the fall of 1973 at a San Diego Mesa College Community Orchestra concert.

When Martha Ramos read the article, she was surprised to see that Denise and Peter played in the Mesa Community Orchestra. The picture was taken in 1973 and she, too, was in the orchestra at that time!

"The more I looked at the picture, the more I realized I would have been in an extended photo," Martha remarked.

That extended photo is at the end of ths article.

Martha, Denise, and Peter immediately made contact and met for coffee and a long conversation. They also found an Iowa connection. Martha was a member of the University of Iowa Symphonic Band. Peter taught at the University of Iowa, and Denise also lived in Iowa (all at different times).

"It is amazing that all three of us ended up in the Boulder Concert Band for this concert season," Martha added.

How long have you been in the Boulder Concert Band?
I first joined in 1980 and played until I moved to Texas in 1991 (minus one year when we were away on a leave of absence). We were in San Antonio for 22 years during which I played in the San Antonio Symphonic Band and the San Antonio Wind Ensemble. I also played with Fiesta Flutes (flute choir) and Harmonie (flute, clarinet duo). Beginning in 2011, we were back in Colorado for the summers only and I played the park concerts for three seasons. We moved back for good in July, 2013 and I am very happy to be back in the Boulder Concert Band.

What is the most recent concert you've attended?
